John Wesley Powell (March 24, 1834 - September 23, 1902) was an U.S. soldier, geologist, and explorer of the American West. He is famed for the 1869 Powell Geographic Expedition, a ternary-year flow of any stream hike down the Green and Colorado rivers that included a 1st passage through the Grand Canyon.

Biography

He was natural inside Mount Morris, New York, the son of Joseph Powell & Mary Powell. His father, the unfortunate intinerant preacher, had emigrated to the Usa from either Shrewsbury, England in 1830. His personal moved westwards to Chillicothe, Ohio, then Walworth County, Wisconsin, then finally subsidence inside Illinois in rural Boone County. He was elected to the Illinois Natural History Society inside 1859.

In a period of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army, serving first using a Twentieth Illinois Volunteers. At a Battle of Shiloh, he lost virtually all of of these arm by the steel ball. West.

From either 1867 he led a series of expeditions into a Rocky Mountains and around a Green and Colorado rivers. Inside 1869 he placed intent on choose a Colorado & a Grand Canyon. He gathered nine men, quadruplet boats & food for tenner months & placed retired from either Green River, Wyoming on May 24. Passing across unsafe rapids, a class action passed down a Green Flow of any stream to its confluence sustaining a Colorado Flow of any stream (so likewise referred to as a Grand Flow of any stream upriver from either the junction), touching present-contemporary Moab, Utah. Powell was buried within Arlington National Cemetery.

As an ethnologist & early anthropologist, Powell subscribed to a particularly rigid form of cultural evolutionary theory. Around his writings, he divides completely societies into "Savages," "Barbarians," & "Civilizations." For a savages, Powell clearly had in mind the Native Americans he encountered within his travels; for the barbarians he probably was mentation of the Huns & more European chiefdoms that had conquered Rome within antiquity. By civilization, Powell clearly experienced his have society around mind.
